About
The Fruit Republic

The Fruit Republic (TFR) was established in 2009 to let the world discover the fantastic taste of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables and make Vietnamese consumers proud of their home-grown produce.  Since that time, we have grown into Vietnam’s leading fresh produce company and the only exporter in the world with year-round supply programmes of GLOBALG.A.P. certified pomelo, seedless lime and dragon fruit.  TFR is also the first company in Asia to develop certified organic lime.   At the same time, we have built the Mekostar brand into the leading domestic fresh produce brand by delivering a wide range of high-quality, fresh and safe fruits and vegetables to consumers, modern retailers and restaurants across Vietnam.

Founded by a team of experienced Dutch and Vietnamese fresh produce professionals. We have developed and established a successful contract farming system and two temperature-controlled processing facilities in distinct agro-climatic zones: a BRC grade-A certified facility in the tropical Mekong Delta and a HACCP certified facility in the temperate highlands of Da Lat.

At TFR we care for our farmers and workers, so our packhouses and our contract farmers follow labor practices that comply with the SMETA social standards established under the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), as well as the GRASP social standard established as a voluntary component of GLOBALG.A.P.

Our success stems from investing in our farmers, our farms and our packhouses. We are doing this with a dedicated, passionate and experienced team of  Dutch and Vietnamese agriculture professionals. We focus on quality, R&D, innovation and compliance with the highest international food safety, quality and social standards.

The Fruit Republic Can Tho

In Can Tho, we operate the first temperature-controlled packhouse and fresh cut facility in Vietnam.  This 4,000 m2 BRC-certified packing facility has several washing, sorting, grading, and packaging lines to allows us to handle large volumes of fruits under standards that meet strict food safety requirements while sorting and grading the products for size and color.

Our 750 m2 high-care fresh cut room is manned by 75 well-trained staff who prepare a wide range of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, including honey pomelo, pink pomelo and jack fruit, as well as iceberg lettuce, diced carrots, cucumbers and celery.  This focus on quality assurance and superior technology have allowed us to become the leading supplier of fresh cut produce to supermarkets, professional food service companies, international airlines and a growing number of multinationals in Vietnam.

The Fruit Republic Dalat

In Da Lat, we have been sourcing fresh vegetables and fruit since 2009.  Lam Dong’s fertile plateau at 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea-level offers warm days and cool nights, a perfect environment for growing our crisp and tasty vegetables.  We source from our GLOBALG.A.P certified greenhouses as well as local VietGAP certified contract farms to provide high quality vegetables and passion fruit to retailers and restaurants across Vietnam.  In addition, key products such as iceberg lettuce, sweet pepper, beef tomatoes and cabbages are exported to locations throughout Asia and the Middle East.

With expanding production and sales, our new 2,000 m2 HACCP-certified packing facility  was completed in 2018. The facility provides specialized areas including preliminary processing, packaging and storage and each area meets international quality standards for food safety.

Among our more than 110 staff based in Da Lat, TFR’s team of agronomists work closely with the farms in its network to provide the tastiest and most resilient varieties.  The packhouse is also conveniently located near to the farms to ensure that products enter the cold chain as quickly as possible. Our focus on knowledge sharing and applied technology means that every day our Dalat packhouse is bringing the best products to consumers under the best conditions.  Combined with its focus on international quality standards we have become the source of the leading fresh produce brand for the Vietnamese market.

Hydroponic systems

Hydroponic farming means that crops are grown in nutrient-rich solutions with substrates, rather than soil. When growing in soil, plants use valuable energy developing elaborate root systems to seek out nutrients and water. Hydroponics brings the nutrients directly to the plant – in the right quantity at the right time. This means that plants can focus their energy on growing fruits, resulting in better quality and faster growing rates. Hydroponic farming also reduces the water needed to grow a crop by as much as 80%, so it is good for the consumer and the environment.

Organic farming

Organic farming relies on natural methods, such as using natural enemies to control pests in a sustainable way. These natural solutions include a combination of beneficial insects, fungi and organic compost that replace agro-chemicals to control diseases and insects that are harmful to plants. So, they are good for the plant, the environment, and you.

Automatic root watering technology

Automatic root watering technology delivers water straight to the root, so plants grown in soil do not need to waste energy searching for moisture but can focus on growth. The root watering systems also allow for nutrients to be delivered directly to the root zone. The system operates more efficiently than conventional fertilizer application since the nutrient delivery and uptake can be carefully measured and controlled, reducing the chance of over- fertilization.

Variety testing

The controlled conditions of our greenhouses also allow us to conduct variety testing. In these tests new vegetable varieties can be tested to determine optimum growing conditions and to assess their performance against existing varieties – for example we compare yields, shelf-life and taste. Through these tests we can improve the performance of our farms, while also providing valuable insights to our contract farmers, sharing growing protocols and varieties that bring fresher, tastier food to you.

Insect trap systems

Insect trap systems are used to eliminate or prevent pests. On our farms, we apply two insect trap systems, sticky color traps and pheromone traps to optimize pest prevention and increase quality and food safety for our vegetables. Our traps use attractive colors and smells to lure the insects to a glue mixture that traps the insect and prevents it from attacking the plants.

Bio controls

Ensuring the quality and food safety of products is a priority on our farms. So we use bio controls, natural solutions, to solve problems related to pests and diseases. These natural solutions include a combination of beneficial insects, fungi and organic soils that can replace chemical pesticides to control diseases and insects that are harmful to plants. Our bio controls are good for the plant, the environment, and you.

Greenhouses

Greenhouses are one of the most advanced technologies currently applied in high-tech agriculture. The greenhouse is designed to extend the growing season by controlling the environment, whether it be the growing temperature or the amount of water that crops receive. Sensors linked to the roof of our greenhouses help to achieve this by measuring the temperature and humidity conditions and then adjusting the roof panels to allow in more or less air. In addition, because the greenhouse is a closed system, the chance of being affected by pests and diseases is reduced. At the same time the closed system can keep beneficial insects indoors. Reducing unwanted pests and trapping beneficial ones results in healthier plants, which in turn means that less chemicals are needed. In addition, our greenhouse roofs are covered with a special film that helps amplify indoor light and scatter it uniformly so that plants mature at the same time. Moreover, this also prevents harmful UV rays from reaching the plant and stops the formation of condensation, further limiting diseases.
